Dr. John Happel MD has the highest qualifications for treating varicose veins in all of Pittsburgh and the surrounding area -Here is why.
Dr. John Happel MD is actively Board Certified in Vascular Surgery.
He trained in vascular surgery at the world-famous Mayo Clinic.
He practiced Vascular Surgery for fifteen years and served as Chief of Surgery at UPMC South Side.
He transitioned exclusively to the treatment of veins in 1999 and has the longest personal experience in treating varicose veins in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Happel was the first physician to perform laser treatments for varicose veins in the Pittsburgh area.
Dr. Happel has personally performed over ten thousand varicose vein procedures including Endovenous Ablation procedures, Radiofrequency Closure procedures, phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency (leaky valves).
He received the prominent Registered Vascular Technician certificate (RVT) and the Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) certification demonstrating the highest standard in vascular ultrasound performance and interpretation which is essential in diagnosing and treating varicose veins.
Dr. Happel provides the highest standard of quality and compassionate care to his patients and has been published for his wealth of experience and knowledge.
He is committed to the traditional one on one approach to treating patients on an individual basis as opposed to the gang approach provided at most other vein offices in Pittsburgh.
We are a local privately-owned physician’s office and are not part of a huge vein care conglomerate or franchise.
We are not a med spa like many vein practices in Pittsburgh.
For that reason, you will be treated as a person or as an individual and not just another case.
We offer both Endovenous Laser and Radiofrequency Ablation under local anesthesia.
Bulging large varicose veins are removed through undetectable nicks in the skin made with a needle.
That results in no scarring and no sutures are required. Stripping is no longer performed.
During all vein treatments, all patients are awake, comfortable and communicating with the office staff during their procedures.
This is the standard of care across the country for treating varicose veins.
We believe general anesthesia (going to sleep) or intravenous sedation is not required or necessary.
Your ability to communicate with Dr. Happel and his team during your procedure is essential. It also assures less discomfort after your procedure.
Patients return to normal daily activities immediately. Most patients drive themselves home.
With our minimally invasive techniques, you can return to work quicker with little or no down time.
Most procedures take less than an hour (depending on the extent and size of your varicose veins) in our outpatient accredited vein center.
Many physicians, who treat veins do it part-time or dabble in veins on the side.
Many other self-proclaimed vein specialists are trained in nonrelated specialties such as cardiology, radiology, family practice, and emergency medicine.
Often, they left the fields in which they trained after being burned out or were unsatisfied in their chosen field.
Only vascular surgeons have the skill set and the complete training necessary to handle every possible varicose vein condition no matter how extensive or advanced.
Dr. Happel and his team are entirely committed to the treatment of varicose vein disease.
We are always available for all of our patients who receive venous treatments at our two facilities.
We are always available for you.
We will not be called away by the hospital or its emergency room leaving you stranded or needing to reschedule.
We are always available patients with urgent concerns and needs. 100% available 24/7 at all times is our motto – for your concerns.
As a result, treatment success rates at the Happel Laser & Vein Center are higher than the national success rates for vein care.
From the time of your initial consultation to your last visit, Dr. Happel will be with you every step of the way.
There is no other provider that you will be handed off to during the course of your treatment.
He will not delegate your vein care to any other provider. There are no physician’s assistants or nurse practitioners to get in the way.
Accreditation is voluntary except in Massachusetts.
Vein center accreditation ensures the facility has been inspected just like a hospital.
Inspections are important to ensure the utmost in safety and to maximize your results.
Dr. Happel himself will perform a venous ultrasound mapping and discuss the treatment plan at the time of your initial consultation.
An accurate diagnosis with your input is essential to formulate a successful treatment plan.
This is especially true in patients who have had partial or unsuccessful previous treatments elsewhere or who come to us for a second opinion.
Many patients sense that the treatment plan at other vein clinics is overly aggressive or inappropriate. Many times, they never saw a physician at all during their initial consultation.
Doppler venous ultrasound is an easy and painless test that is fundamental to evaluating the functionality of your venous circulation.
We even warm the gel to make it more comfortable for you.
Women who have had cold gel at the obstetrician’s office know what I mean.
Our vascular laboratory is fully accredited as well as our vein center to ensure accurate and consistent diagnoses.
In fact, Dr. Happel is also an RVT and also holds the Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) certificate.
Our vein center is the one that people choose after they have done their research.
It’s the one where doctors send their family and friends and where the doctors themselves come for treatment.
People in the medical field and “in-the-know” come to where other medical professional go – and that would be the Happel Laser and vein Center.
Our vein center has over thirty years of experience with the increasingly difficult problem of dealing with insurance companies.
Our expertise includes obtaining pre-authorization and preapproval to ensure that your benefits are confirmed ahead of time for all medically necessary procedures.
We will confirm the status of your deductible and co insurance before your procedure to make the whole process as seamless as possible.
Insurance companies have differing requirements which we are very familiar with handling.
We do not want you to be surprised with an unexpected bill for out-of-pocket expenses resulting from the ever-changing guidelines that we face.
